“many factors outside of our control” - says Walmart who became what it is today by using it size to strong arm suppliers into doing what it wants.

Low GWP refrigerants are already coming to market, a big Walmart contract could really help move that along. Even if it spread out over the next few years.

Also, after spending a little too much time on this app lately, it really hit me reading this - Emily is still a stone cold journalist in an ocean of Substack opinion - Thanks

With Trump in power there is no desire to even pretend to try and hit climate or sustainability goals I guess.

But it seems like plastic has taken a backseat to other climate coverage so thank you for reporting on it!

I think what's so frustrating is that Walmart thinks they can quietly make changes to their website and renege on their stated climate changes like no one will notice. If you're going to backtrack and capitulate, at least have the gumption to say it out loud.

Walmart is no angel here, but the systems we face are truly what is so incredibly broken. It's the most gargantuan task humans have ever encountered, not to put it lightly.

A boycott of Whole Foods might be possible but Walmart Shoppers do not care about the environment as much as they do care about shopping where stuff is cheaper. Likewise for Costco shoppers. Their oversized shopping carts tell the story. Attempts by Stop the Money Pipeline and Third Act to get Costco to dump their Citibank credit card have been unsuccessful.

Boycotts don’t have to be all or nothing. Targeting specific product lines or picking other supermarkets where they exist can also put pressure on the company as it shows they can’t just expect to grow the way they have in the past. There’s also a question if students and young professionals can be organized in a way where they say no to working with Walmart and deny them growth that way. Walmart is a big company and while they might not listen to all stakeholders, there are certainly some stakeholders they care more about (including, it appears, activist shareholders trying to hold them back).

And also, as another commenter says, what a wasted opportunity given their demands they can place on their producers. Beyond that they could have been true leaders in EV charging if they added solar canopies on their parking lots, but it appears they’ve chosen not to lead instead …

Another sign that the corporations are only thinking of their bottom line. Walmart is in big trouble with Trump's Chinese tariffs, along with a lot of other large retail companies and they're cutting costs anyway they can right now. Saving the climate always seems to be the first thing to go when these mega-corporations start to lose money. History is repeating itself once again.
