I know I should not feign surprise. But I don't have a better word for it. I remain consistently surprised leaders / people / society are so cheaply bought off to "deny" climate change when they simultaneously know or, at a minimum, suspect their children's lives will be destroyed by their actions. Speechless to describe it. I'm glad people like Emily try to write about it.
As the song says, you don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. Even oil execs understand that climate change is making extreme weather events more probable. Anyone who argues to the contrary at this point has their head buried in the sand.
Is the current Presidential administration’s crusade to pump America’s reserves of crude oil dry really the best plan they can promote? Must we preserve our inherited internal combustion engine (ICE) car culture or should resource policy consider the needs of future generations, people we will never know?
One cannot know the form of future society or its resource needs, but a guess might be in order. Please let us assume that our solar system can be profitably exploited to the benefit of all life on Earth.
Out in the asteroid belt, amongst the various moons and the planet Mars all orbiting around the sun are vast material resources & maybe even plenty of water ice. The technological culture that can work out there might require huge, really vast spherical pressurized space ships made out of crude oil derived plastics These “Solar System Ships” would be miles in diameter as even at just 12 pounds per square inch atmospheric pressure the middle zone would be fully shielded against space & solar radiation, just as the miles of airy sky shield earthlings.
Several giant Ferris Wheel type contraptions tethered to the spherical hull would provide significant simulated gravity for passengers, crew & even gardens helping to prevent bone & muscle losses as well as serving as gyroscopic stabilization for the ship.
Should these currently science fiction notions prove possible, then every ton of crude oil that our private commuting, frequently wasteful errands and frenzied tail chasing that our ICE cars & trucks consume today is another ton lost to such future space ships and other unknown needs our descendants may depend upon. Besides, we have cleaner, cheaper and quick to build mature alternative energy systems of windmills and solar arrays easily scaled to cities, towns or villages yielding clean storable electrical power. Continued global warming changing the climate threaten most everything alive. Foreclosing future possibilities serves only the already way too wealthy oil industry’s on-going greed may not be wise.
This is why we need to spread the word on calling the Trump Administration and fossil fuel executives a title worthy of their actions: Climate Change Cheerleaders. All of their policies, all of their defunding actions are explicitly promoting climate change, and we have the science to back that up. The headline for Trump's visit should be "Trump visits the flooded area to confirm that climate change is happening according to plan"
