Im staying as a paid member bc there’s nothing more important and I believe in you Emily and I trust through your recommendation Arielle will find a new work home to continue doing her magnificent work. Take care of yourselves Emily and Arielle, we need you, we need your voices. Breaks are as important as the work. And THANK YOU. You make a difference in our world.
You're struggling with burnout? I struggle with burnout sometimes just getting in the right frame of mind to READ the excellent work you two put together. I CAN'T BEGIN TO IMAGINE the strength it must take to research, report and produce the content you tackle and to continue to do so in such a consistent and high quality manner. My paid subscription is a small gesture of thanks. Arielle -- I hope you find an outlet worthy of your insight and communication talent. Emily -- I wish you peace in your recuperation and look forward to seeing your next step in helping all of us better understand the challenges our world faces. Thank you!
I'm staying as a paid member as well. I recommended Heated to my local NPR station as the best in climate and environmental reporting. You two are fantastic journalists. Take all the time you need, Emily, and Arielle, let us know where to follow you.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Nothing, but what has been said cannot be repeated enough: THANKS and keep speaking truth to power in whatever ways you can. Take a break, I'm still in too, and keep us posted Arielle!
I keep my paid subscription because the climate is the most important pressure point of our time, whether it is politics or science or how we handle it as human beings. I appreciate that it is not easy to investigate and report on and takes a toll on mental health. Thank you for continuing on this important work.
I will remain a paid subscriber because independent climate journalism is crucial—and HEATED is just a great read. Thank you, Arielle, for your excellent and impactful work these past two years. I will follow you wherever you land! And thank you Emily for running such a thoughtful publication. I hope you have a peaceful break.
Also staying as a paid subscriber! Heated is one of only 2 newsletters I read every issue of - and the other is more links & images than reporting. Good for you, Emily, catching the signs of burnout - it cannot have been easy to talk to Arielle about but you did the right thing for you & thus for this whole community. There IS help for burnout and prevention is possible! Arielle, I hope you find the best next step for you right away - and even if it takes some time you'll get there. Wish I could hire you both for the excellent work! (But I'm a mediator, I don't work in climate or journalism - just run my own business so I know the hard work of creating your own revenue.)
Thank you both for your amazing reporting and commitment to climate journalism. Emily, I'm proud of you for catching the signs early and making hard decisions before you fall apart. Arielle, I can't wait to follow you where you land, make sure to let us know!
A quick relatable note, this week/month/year, I have been feeling the growing concerns of burnout and overwhelm as I have leaned into a more "leadership" role in my work, but for the last two days I have taken a step back into the data analysis part of my job and I feel a calm and joy come over me. I created that map/graph/relationship! It reminds me that I am in this for the creation of science, and while growth can be good, I want to center the work that led me into my career.
Best of luck to you both in 2025. I'll be reaedy to read when you are ready to write. :-)
As Octavia Butler wrote so long ago, god is change. Whatever comes next for both of you, I'm sure our Heated community will celebrate it. Thank you both for all you've done, for all the time and effort while navigating the parts of your lives that are invisible to us. I just re-upped earlier this month and plan to continue. Please let us know where Arielle lands!
Given all the $$ flowing to climate activism organizations (like Rockefeller heirs funding the soup-tossing network A22), it's rough to see the support gap good accountability journalists face. There's only so much general audiences can give in an online world with so many paywalls. Here's hoping your time off and your drum kit help build the energy for the work ahead. As for Arielle, there IS a climate accountaiblity journalism position open at my alma mater Propublica. https://boards.greenhouse.io/propublica/jobs/4427051006?gh_src=7c2cf0166us
Climate burnout is a real thing. It's happened to me as I try to juggle writing a monthly newsletter, lobbying members of Congress, and trying to stay connected with my local climate advocacy group. All while reading and keeping up with all the great work that writers like Emily and Arielle produce. And that's just the climate slice of life. There are still family, friends, and personal enjoyment aspects of life that must be nurtured. Take care of yourself first Emily. Arielle is talented and will land in a good place. Know that you are part of her growing story.
You are both incredible. Thank you for your work. Take the rest you need--this is exhausting and emotionally demanding work. I will continue to support you both!
To Emily: I've been with you from the start & will continue to stick with you. Yours was one of my first substack subscriptions and I intend to keep it up despite cutting back elsewhere!
To Arielle: Your contributions have been nothing short of AMAZING, and your ability to ferret out the dirty details of greenwashing and climate destruction have been inspiring. I wish you all the best in the furtherance of your journalistic career & hope that I see your byline in other esteemed publications!
I sympathise (UK English spelling). Well done with HEATED. Make the best of your break for a well-deserved and thorough recovery. I too may take a short pause from authoring Dermot’s Substack about climate change. – Paying subscriber.

Couldn’t have said it any better.
I was going to say the exact same thing! I’m sticking with you. Let’s see what the coming months bring. In the meantime, rest up!

Looks like a great opportunity; thank you very much!

I'm sticking around (as a paid member). Thanks for the amazing reporting. Take it easy, and best to Arielle.
