The point about the spirit of the original Earth Day being corrupted is definitely on target. Speaking on that day in 1970, Sen. Gaylord Nelson said this: "Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures."
Thank you; I had no idea. But why should we be surprised? I suspect somewhere there's a company(ies) trying to figure out how to profit from the out-of-control policing in this country. Etc. I'm celebrating early by watching the Osprey Cam from the Nature Conservancy as they prepare the nest and get ready to lay the eggs! Hope it's OK to include a link; if not, pls. delete. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLXj4F-zt3o
Yeah, you see how quickly the pandemic got coopted by companies showing how much they supposedly care. A critical focus of Earth Day should definitely be how pollution is inextricably linked with systems of oppression, economic or otherwise.
Emily—long time subscriber first time commenter. Would you have time/interest (not necessarily soon) to investigate whether Solstice is worthwhile/legit? It looks kind of icky but it’s the kind of market-facing climate endeavor that the many wealthy centrists in my life would probably donate to if assured it was not a scam
This is the message I think needs to get out this week. At his inauguration, Joe Biden said we would lead by the power of our example. In other words, actions speak louder than words.
Yet, when he convenes his summit this week to climatesplain to the world, he will be the one building a brand new tar sands pipeline in 2021. McKibben and others have said this is the make or break decade to get any kind of handle on runaway climate change. But we are starting it off by building Line 3 in a blue state under a Democratic president. And this is happening when our other border is an ongoing headache for Biden because of so many climate refugees.
At the same time as MN is building Line3, its attorney general is suing Exxon, etc. arguing that, if they had only been more forthcoming about the link between fossil fuels and climate change, we as a society wouldn’t have done so many fossil foolish things. Hello 🤦🏻♂️
All this flying around the world by John Kerry twisting arms for far-off promises by leaders who will be long-gone is a waste compared to doing the thing that Biden was right about - leading by the power of example.
Minnesota’s Chavin trial will render a verdict soon regarding police conduct and racial justice.
Whether or not that state’s Line 3 gets built and becomes operational may well be more telling about the future of climate change and climate justice than anything Biden, Kerry, Trudeau, etc. have to say at the summit on Earth Day.

Thank you, Emily, and environmental reporters everywhere! That 2 to 3 percent is worth it, IMHO.
